AUBURN, Wash. - A motorist was killed early Thursday in Auburn when his SUV went off the road and slammed into a tree.

Auburn police responded to the scene, in the 4900 block of Kersey Way SE in Auburn, at about 12:20 a.m. Thursday.

A witness told officers that the driver, identified as a man in his mid-50s, was heading north on Kersey Way in a mid-sized SUV at about 35 or 40 mph just before the crash.

His vehicle went off the road, slid about 20 feet down a shallow embankment and crashed into a tree, Auburn police said. No other vehicles were involved.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The road had been plowed minutes before the accident, but spots were slippery.
