Man arrested after leading police on chase around South Sound
TUKWILA, Wash. -- A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after leading police on a high-speed chase around the south King County area. It began around 1:10 p.m. when a King County Sheriff's deputy did a traffic stop on a GMC Jimmy in the Covington area, officials said. But when police pulled them over, a man and woman inside got out and ran away. The deputy stayed with the car in case they came back. A few minutes later, a motorcycle was seen speeding away from a nearby area with the couple on board, investigatos said. King County Guardian One helicopter was nearby and chased after the motorcycle with officers on the ground following, deputies said. At some point, the woman either got off or fell off the motorcycle and was detained by deputies. Meanwhile, the motorcycle was reaching speeds of 100 mph so ground units called off the pursuit. However, several helicopters, including Air 4, kept following the motorcycle which weaved around streets near Sea-Tac Airport. He eventually came to a rest in the parking lot at the Claim Jumper restaurant at SouthCenter Mall. Video from Air 4 showed the man jumping off the motorcycle and having to walk the bike to a parking spot before he ran around the exterior of the restaurant -- helmet still on -- and eventually ran inside. A few moments later, a number of police officers arrived at the scene and video showed a man being led out in handcuffs a short time later. It's not known why the couple ran from officers. Deputies say the Jimmy was not stolen.
