PARKLAND, Wash. -- Sheriff's deputies say a woman was found slain in her home near here Monday morning, and the woman's husband estranged tried to take his own life.

Pierce County sheriff's Sgt. Jerry Bates said deputies were called to the home in the 2600 block of 128th St. E. after a co-worker of the victim said she failed to show up for work or call in sick.

Deputies found the woman dead inside of "homicidal violence," and the woman's husband was injured with what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound. He was rushed to Tacoma General Hospital with critical injuries, but was expected to survive.

Bates said investigators are treating the incident as a murder and attempted suicide.

"it's insane. I cannot believe this happened," said neighbor Michelle Dennewith. "This is so crazy. That family is so wonderful."

Investigators said the man was arrested last August for investigation of domestic violence. His wife had obtained a restraining order against the man, they said, but the order had since expired.
