AUBURN, Wash. - One person was killed and three others were seriously injured early Saturday when a car crashed into a bridge structure in Auburn.

Paramedics and police rushed to the scene, in the 3000 block of R Street SE, at about 3:50 a.m. Saturday.

There they found a car had smashed into the R Street bridge railing, trapping four people inside the vehicle, said a spokesman with Valley Regional Fire Authority.

Crews extricated all four of the car's occupants from the vehicle. Three were rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries, and one was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the Auburn Police Department.

There were early unconfirmed reports that several people who knew each other were travelling together in two cars, and that one of the cars crashed into the bridge railing while trying to pass the other one.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
