Once home to troubled bar, Belltown space finds Jesus
SEATTLE -- A building that once housed a club notorious for fights and stray bullets has found Jesus.

The old Tabella's Night Club in the city's Belltown neighborhood will soon reopen as a church, and the place that once worked hard to keep certain people out will soon welcome all, even those with a checkered past.

The building used to pack a crowd every weekend as Tabella's, where security routinely patted patrons down at the door. During its run, police responded to several fights and shootings near the club, and neighbors complained about stray bullets.

Because of those troubles, Tabella's is no more. And Tabella's old space has found the least likely of successors.

The Mars Hill Church has found a new home at the Belltown spot, where it will hold worship services and youth ministries in the heart of a neighborhood that has seen its share of rowdy weekend nights.

"Yes, I'm excited about this space," said Pastor Tim Gaydos of Mars Hill Church. "I love it. This is just exactly what we were looking for, very industrial, and I think it definitely gives us that raw edge that we like."

Church members want to show Tabella's neighbors that the building is taking a complete change in direction.

"To be able to come into a place like this building that has had a little bit of a checkered past," Gaydos said, "I think there's a great need for Jesus-focused vibrant churches in the city."

The old bar has bee torn out.

"No Jagermeister, or anything like that," said Gaydos. "There's a lot of water."

And there will still be music, but to the beat of a different drummer.

"Well, I will be doing a little dancing, you know. I will be getting my groove on a little, not a lot. No, I'm just kidding," Gaydos said.

The Mars Hill Church's new downtown location is set to open in March.
