Mother arrested after baby is hospitalized with critical injuries

CENTRALIA, Wash. -- Sheriff's deputies have arrested a young woman who is suspected of causing life-threatening injuries to her 4-month-old child.

Rachel Bryan, 20, was booked into the Thurston County Jail early Wednesday for investigation of assault of a child.

Thurston County sheriff's Sgt. Ken Clark said medics were called to a home near Centralia on Tuesday afternoon and found the child suffering from severe head injuries.

The child was taken to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma and is currently on life support.

"At this point it's not looking good," Clark said.

Officials have not said exactly how the child was injured, but say they have evidence indicating that Bryan is responsible.

"The investigation is still ongoing," Clark said. "We certainly have enough at this point to comfortably feel that she needs to go to jail."
