Police: Baby assaulted by mom dies of injuries

TACOMA, Wash. - A 4-month-old child has died of severe head injuries that deputies believe were sustained during an assault by the child's own mother.

The baby was rushed to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma on Tuesday with life-threatening injuries, and despite doctors' best efforts the child died at about 4:35 p.m. Saturday.

The baby's mother, Rachel Bryan, 20, was booked into the Thurston County Jail early Wednesday for investigation of assault of a child.

There was no immediate word on whether the charges would be increased now that her child has died.

Thurston County Sheriff's Sgt. Ken Clark said the baby's injuries were discovered when medics were called to a home near Centralia on Tuesday afternoon and found the child suffering from severe head injuries.

Officials have not said exactly how the child was injured, but say they have evidence indicating that Bryan is responsible.
