Woman grazed by bullet in downtown Seattle
SEATTLE -- Police are looking for answers after a pair of afternoon shootings in downtown Seattle left one woman with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 3rd Avenue and Yesler Way just after 5 p.m. this evening.
When they arrived on scene, police found a woman in her 50s who had been shot in the leg. She said had been standing on the east side of the sidewalk in the 500 block of 3rd when she was hit, but she didn't know where the shot came from.
A witness to the shooting said he was standing at a bus stop near the victim when she was shot. He said he heard five shots and watched the woman drop to the ground with a wound to her hip.
Medics said the woman was alert and conscious when she was taken to Harborview Medical Center.
After interviewing witnesses, police learned that the shots might have come from the nearby Frye Building. Police cordoned off Cherry, James and Jefferson streets, as well as Yesler from 3rd to 4th, for more than three hours. The courthouse was also evacuated as police swarmed the area and a SWAT team invaded the Frye.
They found someone who they are calling a "person of interest" inside the building, but that 56-year-old man was eventually interviewed and released.
The shooting was the second time officers were called to the area today. Roughly 30 minutes earlier, police were called to the same location after hearing reports of gunshots. Officers searched the area but didn't find any suspects or victims.
While they were investigating the second shooting, police found a bullet hole in a window at a building in the 400 block of 5th Avenue, but it's unclear where the shot was fired.
Anyone with information about either shooting should call 911.
