Falling ice forces closure of Tacoma Narrows Bridge
TACOMA -- For the first time in more than a decade, falling ice forced officials to close the Tacoma Narrows Bridge for more than six hours Friday afternoon.
The move came after pieces of ice -- sometimes as thick as two inches -- been began falling from bridge cables down to the deck, making it too dangerous to cross.
The only other way around the bridge was an hour-and-a-half detour, so many drivers chose to wait out the closure.
"A long time, pretty impatiently," said a stuck driver named Quinton. "But We're first in line for the bridge when it does open so we're looking forward to that."
The bridge's center lanes finally reopened to traffic just after 6:30 p.m.
