BROWNSVILLE, Ore. (AP) - A man who took a teenage girl hostage at a Brownsville gas station Saturday and traded gunshots with a deputy sheriff was killed when he refused to put down his weapon, authorities said.

The gunman was identified as Robert Earl Thompson, 51, of Brownsville. No other details about him were immediately available.

A witness, Ashlie Fries, 14, was waiting outside for her mother, Dianna, to finish her shift as a cashier at the Brownsville Chevron gas station and convenience store when the standoff began.

"A guy pulled up to get gas," the girl told the Albany Democrat-Herald. "He was yelling at the gas worker because he said he needed $10 of gas, fast. He shot up into the air two times out of the car window. Shirley, his girlfriend, got out of the car and ran into the store."

Ashlie followed her. "She said, I can't handle this anymore. He says everyone is out to get him,"' Ashlie said. "Then she locked herself into the bathroom."

Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller later identified the woman as Shirley Coulter, 50, of Brownsville. She had two grandchildren with her, ages 3 and 4, and took them with her when she bolted from the car at the gas station, according to Ashlie's account.

Then, according to the witness, the gunman took a hostage, grabbing a girl who had pulled into the station to buy gas. She was later identified as Nicole Street, 16, of Crawfordsville.

"He started walking toward the store with the girl with the gun to her back. By that time we had locked the doors."

Another gas station attendant was still outside, but the shooter did not threaten her.

Ashlie said the gunman was holding the hostage by her shirt, still with the gun at her back.

"Cops pulled up at that point," she said.

The first call came into the 911 dispatch center at 1:38 p.m., Mueller said. Then several more calls came in from people who had heard the gunfire.

Ashlie said next the gunman started banging on the locked doors of the station's convenience store with his gun, still holding his hostage.

The suspect than took at least one shot in the direction of a deputy who had arrived.

"The cop shot at him and he fell over and the girl took off running," Ashlie said.

Mueller said Deputy Dave Lawler fired the shot that ended the standoff.

"The suspect refused to drop his weapon and the deputy was forced to shoot him," Mueller said.

He said the Marion County sheriff's office will handle the investigation.

Less than 30 minutes after the shootout, dozens of Brownsville residents had gathered around the scene, which covered more than a block in front of the gas station and across Highway 228.

"I've never seen anything like this," said Renee Gatchet of Brownsville. "I was scared out of my mind. That poor girl."
