RENTON, Wash. -- The ophthalmologist who disappeared after abruptly shutting down his business more than a week ago has had some trouble with the law, KOMO 4 News has learned.

According to court documents, Dr. Chris Phillips pleaded not guilty in January to three charges related to what police reports describe as a loud party at his Renton home. Phillips has been charged with supplying liquor to a minor, making a false statement and breach of peace.

The documents state Phillips missed a court date on Feb. 25. "Defendant is in Oklahoma due to a family emergency," the papers said.

But KOMO 4 News contacted Phillips' mother in Oklahoma. She said her son is not there and that she hasn't seen him or even talked to him in a "long time." Phillips' mother says she knows "nothing about what's going on with his business."

Those who worked with Phillips at Lomas Lasik and Eye Care Center said they can't imagine the charges are linked to shutting down his business.

The sign on the door says the eye center is temporarily closed, and gives the number of a nearby eye clinic. The employees of that clinic did not know Phillips' whereabouts either.

Phillips is due back in court at the end of April.

We tracked down Phillips' address, but no one answered the door. Neighbors said Phillips left his home about two weeks ago and has a former employee watching his house for him.

That former employee said Phillips went to Eastern Canada to be with his wife, but said he did not know why Phillips shut down his business so suddenly.

Phillips is no stranger to the headlines, first marrying then divorcing Olympic gold medalist gymnast Shannon Miller. In published reports, Miller called their relationship "a painful experience."

Phillips has a valid license and has had no prior complaints about his practice until now.

There is no police investigation; it is perfectly legal for a business to go out of business. The state health department, however, is conducting an investigation.

Those looking for an ophthalmologist can call the Washington State Medical Association's toll-free hot line at (800) 552-0612 for a list of qualified doctors. Callers should specify that they are looking for an ophthalmologist.

Referrals are also available through the Washington Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, which represents more than 300 doctors. The academy can be reached by calling (800) 552-0612 or via its Web site.
