SEATTLE - Two suspects in Wednesday night's shooting at Southcenter Mall appeared in court Friday to face first-degree assault charges in the incident that left one man seriously injured.
Javari M. Gaddy, 20, and Anthony L. Baker, 18, both of Renton, appeared in King County Superior Court, charged with shooting a 21-year-old man during a confrontation in the parking lot outside the mall's north entrance.
Gaddy, who has an extensive criminal record, is being held on $300,000 bail in King County Jail. Baker is being held on $250,000 bail.
Charging papers describe a violent, chaotic scene at the scene on Wednesday night, when the victim was shot in the right arm and right leg, apparently shattering his thighbone. Police say it's a miracle no shoppers were caught in the crossfire.
According to court papers, Gaddy and Baker got into a confrontation with the 21-year-old and others at about 8:15 p.m. outside the mall.
Several gunshots were fired, witnesses said, and the victim was hit. Then Gaddy fled the scene with two other men in a Dodge Magnum, court papers said.
The Dodge was followed by two undercover Tacoma police officers in plainclothes to a Denny's restaurant at Macadam Road and Southcenter Boulevard, where the two men with Gaddy left the vehicle and got into other cars.
Gaddy then drove off by himself in the Dodge Magnum. Undercover officers continued following him until he was pulled over by a marked patrol car at Seventh Street and Madison Avenue in Seattle and placed under arrest.
Later that night, three other men were arrested who witnesses said were involved in the confrontation. Witnesses said of them, Baker, also pulled a gun and fired shots, court papers said.
The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center, and is expected to recover.
Several exterior store windows were shattered and vehicles nearby parked were also hit. Inside the mall, meanwhile, the sound of the gunshots unleashed sheer panic among shoppers and employees.
Officials locked down the shopping mall immediately after the shooting. Officers patted down each person before letting him or her leave the mall in case additional suspects remain at large.
Police do not know whether the shooting was gang-related, but some of the participants emulated the gang lifestyle.
It is not known what sparked the fight between the two groups, and police said they are looking for more witnesses who can shed light on what led up to the fight, or if they saw anyone get away who may have been involved. Anyone with information is asked to call (206) 433-1808.
