Gunman dead after SWAT team fired upon during standoff

ARLINGTON, Wash. - An alleged gunman is dead after a SWAT team and other police officers came under fire Sunday from one or more shooters during a tense armed standoff in a rural area outside of Arlington.
One suspect was later found shot to death by police and officers are still searching the area to make sure a second shooter wasn't involved and still at large. A weapon was found on the gunman's body and investigators haven't said if he died from police fire.
The drama began at about 1:30 p.m. when a 26-year-old man who lives in the area thought he heard gunshots or fireworks. He hustled his kids inside the house then went to investigate with his father.
The father and son heard another bullet whistle through the branches of a nearby tree, then the son realized he had been shot in the calf. They ran home and called 911.
Deputies responded to the scene, and then they also came under fire. One patrol car was reportedly hit, but no officers were injured.
A SWAT team soon arrived at the scene, about a mile off Highway 530 near Jim Creek Road, and SWAT team officers reported multiple gunshot hits on their armored vehicle.
Police units reportedly then came under fire from different types of weapons, including a high-powered rifle, leading them to believe that there could be more than one shooter.
As the gun battle stretched through most of the afternoon, more armored vehicles were requested from other jurisdictions as far away as Seattle and Whatcom County as a police helicopter circled the scene.
Some residents in the area have been evacuated or warned not to leave their homes. A few on the edge of the scene were allowed back in late Sunday night but others closer to where the gunman was found were still told to stay away.
At the height of the standoff, scanner reports from the scene sounded like a war zone, with multiple police and sheriff units coordinating and positioning themselves strategically.
Eventually police were able to pinpoint the location of a suspected shooter, and later found his body.
The 26-year-old man who was shot in the calf at the beginning of the incident was taken to Cascade Hospital in Arlington, where he was undergoing treatment.

Drugs, booze, holiday weekend and oh let's not forget all the "recipients" on the dole who got their checks Friday. Yep idiots and their $ and bullets are easily parted. Agree with a post below that the Walking Dead are amongst us and we are aren't surrounded but they sadly continue to breed more of their ilk. The shooter who lost his life was probably not a real asset to society.
T'was a weekend for the North enders and rednecks to tweak out. Da boyz in da hood have been quiet, jus shuffling around in dey hoopties.Â
This society is a shell of what it used to be. Get your kids and get out before these hideous things happen to or in front of your family.
Anyone like the TV show, The Walking Dead?...well, that's what this reminds me of....the zombies are restless this weekend.
Very scary! I have friends and family who live around that area. It is very secluded with a lot of trees...easy to hide. I hope SWAT finds the other suspect and no one else gets hurt!
i just heard that they'll probably all be there throughout tonight and possibly into early tomorrow morning.
I'd like to order the double barreled shotgun with a side of high powered rifle, and, oh hold the sanity please.
This *might* not be the right time to announce the survivors exact location...
 @Jill Why? They have absolutely no reason to believe that the victim was a target. If he had been they probably would have aimed higher than his calf...
 @Jill *that the victim was targeted.
 @iliketurtlez The way I read it, the family heard gunshots - someone was shooting near/at them - then went out and got shot. Then police came and also got shot at. One shooter's dead and not talking and who knows what his motivation was for shooting these people. The thing that bothers me is if the second shooter (if there was one) now knows where the guy he was shooting at is.
Holy smokes!!!
I'm hearing from my parents at lake riley that there's a shooter on the hill on the other side of the lake and that people in boats have been shot at. My dad called me and said the fire Marshall told him this.
That was yesterday - no updates today?
oops, sorry - it's today. Got my days mixed up a bit....
FTA:
"Police units reportedly then came under fire from different types of weapons, including a high-powered rifle, leading them to believe that there could be more than one shooter."
Â
Well, we have been repeatedly told that we need these weapons to protect ourselves....Â
 @T H I S I have a pistol, and I had a rifle for awhile but got rid of it as I got tired of the upkeep and the attention it would attract when I went out target shooting in the woods. These days I am content with just using my pistol do I think a rifle classified as protection...as you cannot carry it consealed from day to day I say no....but if you like taking it out to the range shooting sure you should be able to have one... it is irrespnsible owners liek the idiot above that are the problem and not all gun owners are lunatics...
 @T H I S yeah, what a shame.  if we had passed a gun ban the day before, this never would have happened.  i like your thinking.
 @nobelprizeme  @T H I S The CRIMINALS will still have guns whether you ban them or not....
 @nobelprizeme so basically, you can not understand that few guns would mean few deaths and injuries from guns.Â
gotcha.. good to know.
 @T H I S  @SeattleJoe accidental gun accidents?  sounds like it came from a legit source.  how many intentional gun accidents?  just a few?  tell us all about how a gun ban would solve the violence!  we are dying to know.Â
@SeattleJoe "gun owners who have accidentally shot themselves or others - Statistically, VERY FEW"
Â
About 1500 accidental gun deaths, and over 23,000 accidental gun accidents
Â
Yeah... just a few.
 ---------------------------------------------
"you take away peoples means of defense just because there are bad guys out there."
Again, how many have actually used their guns to protect themselves vs how many have had their guns stolen and then used in a crime?
Â
-----------------------------------------------
"Â Yes you probably do have a bunch more nonsensical drivel that the anti-gun zealots have fed you."
by drivel, you mean facts.... yes. By zealot you mean someone who thinks for themself and doesn't rely on bumper sticker talking points.. then again.. yup.
Â
 @T H I S  @NativeWashingtonian Oh how I like to answer the easy ones:
gun owners who have had criminals use their guns against them - VERY FEW
gun owners who have accidentally shot themselves or others - Statistically, VERY FEW. Of the 250-300 million guns in America very few have actually been involved with accidental shootings. Not zero for sure but nowhere near your delusion is implying. Try again.
gun owners who have had their guns stolen to be used in other crimes. - Some, for sure but you take away peoples means of defense just because there are bad guys out there.Â
gun owners who have committed suicide - Not a gun issue. It has been shown that people who want to kill themselves find a way whether its a gun or not.
gun owners who have killed a friend or family member - Sadly not zero but its a decision that people must weigh if they want to own a firearm.
and so on and so on - Yes you probably do have a bunch more nonsensical drivel that the anti-gun zealots have fed you.
Â
Â
Yeah because as we all know criminals all follow the laws, they wouldnt have an illegal weapon if they were outlawed!
 @SchönLicht Well if that is the argument, lets just not make murder a crime in the first place becuase you know.. criminals will do it anyways.
Â
More proof that republicans and critical thinking are not good bedfellows, but they do love their mindless talking points that require little more than copy/paste

 @T H I S I'm conservative. I promise you, facts matter. Like the fact that even certain guns being illegal won't stop people from getting them if they want them.
 @T H I S  @Kodiak liberal = interpret any crafted survey for face value only.  i'd still like to know how you think a gun ban would be implemented, from drafting to collection... can we hear that fantasy?
 @Kodiak Yeah I know, I keep forgetting
conservative = "facts don't matter"
Â
my bad
Â
Yes the National Rifle Association is made up of citizens. However they are also politically very strong. They have put pressure on may candidates and on elected officials to support their agenda. I am a FIRM believer in the right to own guns. I would not because I have tried to shoot and could not hit the broadside of a barn. I do not believe we need assault rifles and I think we need to enforce the laws we already have on illegal sales of guns. I know many people who think I am anti gun but really I'm not. I don't think felons should be able to get guns, there must be waiting periods or cool down periods for the first gun. Prchasers pay for their back ground check. It just seems it is sometimes too easy for idiots to get guns and start shooting. It is scary to think of so many people owning guns while we as a society lose respect for each other and for life in general.
@T H I S
You know you my friend are a very smarmy character. You love to toss out links that mean butt kiss. You donât like guns, well donât own one or donât live where they allow them.   Â
@T H I S @Kodiak That source is far from credible. You chose a blogger to back up a claim? He's a phd who doesn't even specialize in gun crimes or violence. He doesn't take into account purposeful homocides like police and armed citizens protecting themselves. What made you choose him as your source?
@taxpro Where'd you find that lie? Assault rifles were not banned. In fact I purchased one during this time. President bus was never under pressure. It wasn't the NRA pressuring, it was the American people. Clinton even wrote in his book that putting on a ban on certain parts of the assault rifle made his popularity drop. Obama knew this, so he avoided even touching this ban. The American people demanded it. Do you know who the NRA are? They are the American people. That includes service men, police, firefighters, teachers, welders, machinists, etc. The NRA didn't have to pressure anything. It was already demanded by the public. The ban did nothing to crime rates and was useless. Although not too significant, but crime rates actually went slightly up because of the ban. Also, Kodiak's post down below is not a credible source. It's written by a phd blogger who cites no method of his poll. He is a professor known for altruistic studies; not guns. I read his claims and research. It has too many holes in it rendering his "studies" invalid. He also doesn't take into account that the study includes purposeful homocide by police and people trying to protect themselves. Also, Chicago has the highest murder rate in the Nation. They also don't take into account that Chicago considers all unsolved homicides as suicide because they're trying to lower their reported murder rate. How do I know? I used to work in the Cook county courts and my friend is a State's Attorney Assistant (a lawyer) in the homocide division.
 @Kodiak  @taxpro Precisely. Statistically, the scary rifles that look like assault rifles account for so few deaths in America it almost doesn't register statistically. Banning them would sure do a lot to help, not.
 @T H I S  @nobelprizeme Yea right. So instead we would read more "Man stabbed to death while blah blah blah" or "Woman raped while blah blah blah". Sure, take away people protection. Yea thats the answer.
 @taxpro Um, no mention of an assault rifle was made in this story. Just "high powered rifle" which basically means anything that is not 22lr or similar.Â
 @KodiakÂ
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/07/23/six-facts-about-guns-violence-and-gun-control/
@taxpro Assault rifles were never banned under Clinton. His administration limited the size of magazines, and the amount of modifications that could happen to all weapons, not just assault rifles. No matter how you feel about guns the restrictions didn't lower gun violence.Â
Assault Rifles were banned under Clintons administration. President bush let the ban expire under pressure from the NRA of which he is a member.
 @T H I S  @nobelprizemeÂ
Yeah...where's a bridge when you need one?
Anybody know the address this is going down at or any names of people involved?
 @Nobody Unconfirmed I just herd is 1028 on the scanner.
3 officer involved shootings in the past 4 days and many citizen's shooting citizensÂ
Â

 @lpritchett Mr. Pritchett? Do you have an answer/ response to my inquiry?Â
 @Sydthepiper  @lpritchett Cool, thanks Syd.Â
Â
KOMO? Over to you -Â
 @lpritchett Off topic: I e-mailed Livefyre about the lack of an edit button to make posting easier for those of us who fat finger.
A Jeremy Hicks responded as follows:
Â
Thanks for taking the time to reach out to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Our Livefyre Comments 3 beta includes an edit feature, and though we're not exactly sure when KOMO will be adopting Livefyre Comments 3, when KOMO does you'll have an edit button
Â
Is this in the works?

@iliketurtlez Not even close. At the specific time of my comment, the latest update was over 1/2 hour old, just as things were cranking up. Save your burn ointment.
 @lpritchett I think DualLeads might need some ice for that burn.
 @DualLeads  @HonkeyCat The difference is that those "reporting" here don't nee to verify their "reports".
 @OrcasThunder  @DualLeads  @HonkeyCat True.
 @DualLeads  @HonkeyCat I am listening to a live police scanner.
 @HonkeyCat Other officers. A lot of these guys are SWAT who can be anything from patrol officers to detectives or anything else.Â
