SEATTLE - A security guard was injured by gunfire Friday morning in downtown Seattle as he tackled a fleeing suspect in a jewelry store robbery just steps away from the federal courthouse, officials and witnesses said.
The drama unfolded Friday at about 10:30 a.m. when a masked man held up Express Jewelers at Westlake Mall, said Deputy Chief Nick Metz of the Seattle police.
As the suspect ran from the store, he fired a shot into the air. Employees at a nearby Wells Fargo bank branch heard the gunfire and activated their holdup alarm.
Seattle police quickly responded to the scene after the alarm sounded.
Meanwhile, the suspect, 35-year old Edmond Maynor, ran east from Westlake Mall and was chased by security officer from the nearby Mayflower Hotel.
The guard tackled Maynor and fought with him at Seventh Avenue and Stewart Street. Maynor then allegedly opened fire, hitting the security guard in the arm.
Amid the pandemonium, other passers-by then grabbed Maynor and restrained him. They piled on top of the man and held him down until officers arrived, cuffed him and took him into custody.
Watch cell phone video of the incident:
Witnesses said jewelry was seen spilled on the sidewalk after Maynor dropped it. A rubber mask and a gun also were seen lying on the ground.
Police said another man also was seen running from the scene after the robbery, and they are trying to determine if he was an accomplice.
"We have multiple crime scenes that we're working through," Metz said. "It's going to be a little bit before we're able to put everything together."
As the investigation continued, police found what appears to be a bullet hole in the wall of the Express Jewelers store.
Metz also said police do not recommend that citizens try to apprehend armed suspects during or after a crime because it can be very dangerous.
"We tell folks you should not being trying to tackle, not trying to chase anybody ... especially if you know they have a weapon. In this case, fortunately, even after having been shot, it appears the security officer is going to be OK. But not a safe thing to do."
"You've got to think about what the potential consequences are. Especially if you're not armed, and if you're not able to take the kind of action you may need to take against somebody who is. It's a very risky step to take."
He said investigators will be reviewing security video from the courthouse and anywhere else that may have been recording.
Maynor was arrested and booked on robbery and felony assault charges.

An attempt at FORCED REDISTRIBUTION of WEALTH FAILED...
Â
Observation - it potentially proves one thing - when a Liberals money is directly threatened their ideology goes out the window and they act like conservatives....lol
I love seeing the bad guy actually caught for once! Our Heroes!
I'm sure the DoJ will intervene on this young, oppressed man's fate. Seems he was considered suspicious before he even started his robbery attempt. Racism, I tell ya, racism! If it was a white guy, he would have had a better opportunity to commit the crime!
Interesting cell phone video, but it illustrates that sometimes people think something is a movie. This has happened before in downtown Seattle with gunfire between police and a suspect. If its a movie there will be LOTS of trucks and equipment and people with jangling keys and rolls of duct tape standing around the action. If you don't see any of that it is a really crime or real gunfire. I just hope some cell phone video chaser doesn't get shot someday because they don't understand reality from movie making.Â
Way to go guys! Right on. Real men in action. That was awesome. You rock!   PEACE
If you haven't watched the cell phone footage yet, I highly recommend it. Nice quality recording too! I kinda had to chuckle though because the bad guy looked like he was having the worst day of his life ever. Maybe that's why COPS has been running for 20+ years. Makes good tv! LOVE watching the bad guys go down!
@Tattooed_Angel I hope the DoJ doesn't watch it. Otherwise those citizens might be charged with denying this crook his civil rights by unnecessary roughness. One citizen looks like he kicked the crook in the head while another held his head into the pavement. I did get a kick out of seeing the SPD officer show up with a riot gun.
Â
Really hope the security guard is ok and has no lasting damage other than the spare ***hole from the wound.
@LockesChild  @Tattooed_Angel Yes, looks like excessive force. And they did not say please at any time. All self appointed activists who are the only ones who can speak with authority will be angry at the citizens who did this.Â
@Citizen#3457899654 @LockesChild This isn't 'SPD type" of excessive force. In this instance, the man was dangerous, had a weapon, and had just shot someone. Nice try though.
Looking at the pictures 2 thoughts come to mind: Firstly, the subject fired 2 shots but the gun is laying on the ground with an open slide - maybe almost open, not sure. Either he had only 2 rounds, shot quite a few more without being reported, or there was an FTE, which could have saved the security guards day. Secondly, there are about 10 cop cars, and 4+ from Fire/Medic One responding. The effort & cost in human resources to stop one guy with a hand gun is staggering. In the old days you had armed citizens, a Sheriff, and possibly John Wayne, if it was really bad ... There is a steep price for outsourcing personal security to the government.
@Komo Dragon I kind of looks like a failure to extract (partially open slide). The pistol is likely filthy and/or the scumbag probably tried shooting it like some dumb gangster and effectively limp-wristed it. It is good that criminals are generally stupider than the general population, otherwise they would do more damage as you pointed out.

Â
Yeah, better to have a nation of frightened girls.
this guy works at same hotel as the guy who stopped the robber. Â

In the words of Jeff Spicoli " awesome totally awesome."
No Oxycontin tonight for this guy. Good work citizens!
Where is Phoenix Jones when you need him? Â Kudos to Roberto who filled in and stopped this scumbag!!Â
Hate to be him when he wakes up in the morning and realizes it wasn't a bad dream.
I think more people should step in more often. Stories like this, where people step up, make me have a little more hope for society. My guess is that the police feel the same way but are required by policy to discourage this this kind of response. If they encourage it and something goes wrong, they might get the finger pointed at them.
Why does this guy sound like the voice over for that honey badger vid made a while back?
@Jon H LOL... That was my first thought as well! "Honey Badger doesn't give a S..."Â
Waiting for Tracy Vedder to somehow make this all the fault of SPD.
Wow!!
Great job. Those brave folks did what needed to be done at a moments notice !! Very cool to read about.
These people are heroes!
Â
Cheers!
Rick tell him he's wonderful! Trying to reply to u from phone but it won't let mr "Like " or reply ..
The people acted like a pack, not a herd.
Â
Beautiful!
Here's some food for thought:
Â
Maybe those citizens that stopped the man from escaping knew very well what the risks and the potential consequences were. And they didn't give a sh*t.
Â
Good on 'em.
A few questions:
What's the name of the "suspect"?
Where is he from, local or out of the area?
Is this a "strike"... or better yet, a "third strike"?
Thank you KOMO.
Absolutely incredible! I am so glad they caught him! I can't imagine what else he would have done.
Don't mess with Seattle dude, "Stop it"..are you kidding me you piece of garbage.
YOU FEELIN' THE LOVE NOW?! We're done.
Nice work Roberto, I'll be there if you need help with medical bills like others on this forum. Thank You! And to the rest of you brave men, may this be your last deadly encounter. You all deserve medals.
@Yeah_and very cool, im with ya!
OH MAN I WORK WITH THIS GUY!! Â His names Roberto and he is a great guy, this is totally in his character too!! IM proud of you bro!!
I just don't get these morons that are so quick to use a gun in a robbery, let alone to commit such a crime. If they really have that much disregard for human life around them then once you have them in cuffs, politely walk them around to the back of the building and pop them. That way, no one has to see society taking out the trash. Now we get the pleasure of paying for his incarceration with three meals a day, he can get all tatted up, hit the weight room so that when he's released, in a fraction of the time he should have served, he'll actually kill someone next time and then really be put away (less time for good behavior).Â
Is this the sam guy who beat down some guy in the alley and robbed him?
@alildifferent Probably not. I can assure that there is more than one African-American criminal in the Seattle area.
I am SO proud of my fellow Seattleites. Â About not getting involved...screw that.
Whew, that was intense. A bit surprising they didn't tell the guy with the camera to back off for over 3 minutes. Â You gotta be proud of those guys, they jumped right into action without thinking about getting hurt and made sure there was an arrest. Â I especially love who I assume is a Real Change vendor, saying, "You ain't going nowhere, mofo" as his foot kicks the rubber mask and he then says, "Go check on my bag!" Â They can all be proud of themselves tonight.
"Citizens shouldn't get involved".
Ok everyone. let him go.
