Slain barista's husband: 'She didn't deserve it.'

GRESHAM, Ore. - A weary Clint Heichel carefully moves the candles burning outside his apartment door in Gresham, arranging them and gently folding in the wax ears.
"I've tried to keep them lit. It was so nice that they set this up in the apartment complex," he said, adding that the wind sometimes blows out the candles. "I came home to it and it was there. I really appreciate that and I think she'd like that too."
Police announced Friday night that they had found the body of his wife, 21-year-old Whitney Heichel, on Larch Mountain and had made an arrest in the case.
Monday, prosecutors said the suspect, Jonathan Daniel Holt, 24, of Gresham, had sexually assaulted Whitney Heichel before she was murdered. Holt is now charged with aggravated murder and sexual assault. Court documents show he will also be charged with kidnapping and robbery.
Holt didn't enter a plea during a brief appearance by video at the Clackamas County courthouse Monday afternoon. He spoke softly, kept his head down and seemed at one point to wipe away tears.
He's expected to get a court-appointed attorney within three days and return to court on Friday.
Over the weekend, ABC News spent time with Clint as he returned to his apartment and talked to a reporter by the impromptu memorial, which included candles, flowers, and a placard signed by neighbors and friends that had been tacked up next to his door.
Clearly exhausted, Heichel said he sometimes struggles to maintain composure.
"Just trying to maintain without having a mental breakdown. Everybody's been very nice. A lot of appreciation for that," he said while crouched close to the candles and flowers. "It's very difficult to... hold up."
"I got a year and nine months with my wife. I try to keep myself distracted but ... it's very hard ... and sometimes it gets really bad because she was just a beautiful little person and just full of love and she was a ray of light to everybody."
Heichel said he was not able to go to a memorial event for Whitney at a Starbucks but appreciated it. Whitney worked at a local Starbucks location.
Heichel had nothing but praise and appreciation for those who helped look for his wife and quickly made an arrest in the case. "The exposure was awesome and they worked with me to do the best they could to get that out," he said.
He thanked search and rescue workers, detectives, Gresham Police, family and friends.
"There's so many people who won't get a personal thanks from me and I wish I could give them a personal thanks. It's very difficult," he said. "Waking up is hard. This morning I lost it. Last night, I lost it"
"It's completely unfair to me. It's even more unfair to her," he said "She didn't deserve it. She didn't do anything wrong."
He said photos of Whitney always showed her smiling and happy. "Just a beautiful little person, and that's exactly why I married her, because she was just a ray of sunshine to everybody."
"She was also so nice. She just loved people. That's why it's so hard, because she didn't do anything to deserve this. It's just "why?" he added. "That's the only question: why?"

I am so sorry for you! Unfortunately, your 'ray of sunshine' was too nice & naiive! People that are too trusting are the ones who get hurt, or as they say, 'only the good die young!' Looking back on this, he asked for a ride & she should've said NO! I hope people can learn from this! RIP Whitney
every state must have capital punishment...Â
@CIAassassin I agree 100%! Oregon needs to vote out their govenor and elect someone who has no problems with the death penalty.
I hope her husband can find peace in the knowledge that he gave her 22 months of what was probably the happiest time of her life, before she was taken from him.
To the State of Oregon Politicians,
If this isn't a WAKE UP CALL,then I don't know what would be.What happened to Whitney, should NOT have happened. To anyone.Im urging you to put this a TOP PRIORITY in changing the laws. And bring back the death penalty. No dragging it out for years, putting the family thru more hell.We owe it to Whitney and her family to change the law..Make it 'Whitney's Law".Rest In Peace Whitney.

@Femme Fatale I'm surprised you haven't actually deleted your comment yet. Wow.
@Femme Fatale put away your I am woman hear me roar attitude for a second and realize that his words were coming from complete grief not logic and only about his wife, not some larger picture.   Most people get that instantly.
@Femme Fatale Good lord people say some classless things behind the safety of a keyboard... Way to twist a greiving husbands words there, lady.
@Femme Fatale Wow... I can't believe what I read here sometimes, and I cannot believe the insensitivity shown by you.
@Femme Fatale Way to read things way out of context.

Mr Heichel, I must apologize because I thought you were the cause of your wife's disappearance. Boy was I wrong! My condolences go out to you. I hope that POS that killed Whitney will never have opportunity to hurt anyone else. RIP Whitney.
21 months wasnt long enough for Mr. Heichel to enjoy his lovely wife. He should have enjoyed 40+ years with her, having children, seeing grandchildren etc. What Holt did was inexcusable and I sincerely hope he gets what he deserves for taking away Whitney's life and Mr. Heichel's happiness.
Yes Mr. Heichel...actually, no one deserves that...no one...I pray the justice system vigorously prosecutes this guy and he is sent to the gas chamber.Â
SUCKS MUCH!!!
Â
The spew of profanity that wants to come out of me would get me banned from the planet.
Â
So mad!! So senseless!!! All these insane people out there...
Â
Truly, so truly - MONSTROUS!!!
I promise you, being from Oregon Gresham / Troutdale vicinity...which I am... Even if the "Death Penalty" was "Administered"... The punishment, will NEVER for the crime... 'Nuf said...
That poor man. My heart goes out to him and all the family and friends that lost such a beautiful young woman. What a senseless tragedy. I really hope the justice system doesn't drop the ball on this one and the POS that did this gets the death penalty.
My heart breaks for the loss of this beautiful, young woman. My heart goes out to her husband and family. Hold dear her memories and know she still lives in your heart. I hope you can find peace.
I hope that his friends and family will continue to be there to support and shower him with their love. I hope that his faith can give him some comfort at this time as well.  My heart breaks for him, such a senseless tragedy. I hope that this lousy waste of air gets whats coming to him. Â
If I were Mr. Heichel, I would make it my mission in life to make sure that Holt dies either in jail or shortly after being released.
Sorry for your lost, Clint.
Whitney . I do not know you , and from the sounds of it id be blessed to have had the chance of knowing you. I am so sorry you had to go through this , you did not deserve that nor did your family. I am truly sorry and hope that you get the justice you deserve. your smile is beautiful. keep shinning upon the ones you love. R.I.P Whitney Heichel.
Oh, man. Â I had to stop watching because it felt like I was intruding on his grief. Â I really hope he is not alone there. Â Eventually he will have to live there alone, but I hope for now he has someone there with him because he is going to need a lot of support, hugs, and hand holding as he wraps his head and heart around this loss.
@Doxie I agree, I can't fathom carrying on day to day like he has been doing if I was in his shoes. I know I'd be a complete wreck myself.
@SilverGryphon  @Doxie No kidding.  He's probably in a bit of shock.  Her poor parents too, but it's not like any of them have much of a choice.  You have to keep marching on, despite the pain.  She seems like a wonderful person, she would probably want them to be happy again and hopefully they will be someday.
I admire his strength; it has to be terrible for him and everyone involved. I think I would just want to disappear...
Its so painful to know that he had her for such a short time. I hope he can pick up the pieces and find peace again, soon.
Â
RIP Whitney
Incredibly sad; such a short time to have and hold. Prayers for her husband.
This story has really been bothering me at night while I'm trying to fall asleep... I just can't imagine what her husband has been going through.
