Man injured in gyrocopter crash in Lewis County

TOLEDO, Wash. -- A man was injured when a gyrocopter crashed at a local airport on Friday, according to the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the crash happened at around 1:45 p.m. The man was airlifted to a hospital in Portland.

The name of the man and and the extent of his injuries are not known. Deputies said he was the only person on board.

No other details were immediately available.

Like a helicopter, a gyrocopter uses a rotor. However, unlike a helicopter, a gyrocopter's rotor blades are not powered by the engine and therefore, if the engine of a gyrocopter fails, the pilot can glide-land the craft.
