18-year-old Calif. man presumed drowned at Ocean Shores

ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) - An 18-year-old California man is missing and presumed drowned in Ocean Shores after a strong rip current pulled in a group of people.

Ocean Shores Police Sgt. David McManus says eight young people from California were playing in the surf near the beach on Saturday night when a rip current pulled them in. Five of them were able to swim to shore.

McManus says Renelle Paul Alimoren of Pomona, Calif., went back in for two others but did not return. He was last seen a half mile down from where he went in.

KBKW reports Ocean Shores police and fire crews searched from the beach, while the U.S. Coast Guard responded with a boat from Westport and a helicopter from Astoria. They searched the area for several hours, but were unable to locate him.

Two swimmers were treated by paramedics on scene for exhaustion and possible ingestion of sea water.
