Man's faith tested as wife slips into silence after shooting
SELLWOOD, Ore. – Vanessa Ogden was the manager of a popular kids clothing store at the Clackamas Town Center when a gunman opened fire in the mall that Tuesday, Dec. 11.
She was seven months pregnant at the time, and when the shooting started she herded her employees and customers at Justice for Girls into a backroom and kept them safe.
But in the weeks following the shooting, the normally bubbly person started to withdraw and she became really tired and quiet. Eventually, she wouldn't speak at all.
Initially, she and her husband, Doug, thought it was a combination of the pregnancy and maybe the trauma from the shooting. But her condition deteriorated and she wound up in the hospital before Christmas where an MRI revealed she'd had 60 to 70 mini-strokes.
She hasn't spoken since Christmas.
The unwrapped gifts in the Ogden's home say as much about the Christmas they put on hold as they do about Doug Ogden's faith.
"I do have a stack of gifts for Vanessa that I've been saving," he said.
During that tragic day, the 5-foot, 2-inch woman showed her feistiness.
"Even when SWAT came, she told them that she wouldn't open the door unless they showed identification," Doug says. "And the SWAT guy said, 'Well, I can't slide my badge under the door.' So she said, 'OK, I'm going to be the only one coming out but you can't come in.'"
But afterward, that feistiness would fade.
"Her speech was definitely hindered – considerably, although she was able to say one-word answers: 'Hello,' tell people 'Merry Christmas,' 'Thank you.' That kind of thing," Doug said.
Remarkably, despite her condition, Vanessa gave birth to their daughter, Georgia, on Dec. 27.
"Miracles happen all the time, and people who've seen miracles, they can't deny it, and I've already seen one miracle, and I believe another miracle is possible," Doug said.
So as Doug cares for Georgia, and their 16-month-old Carolina, he waits and hopes. And he prays as he feels his faith tested.
"There's been no greater time in my life where I've had to put my money where my mouth is. I mean, do I believe or don't I? So I do," he said.
Vanessa hasn't shown any progress in two weeks so doctors will be doing a brain biopsy to get some more answers. They can't say for certain if the shooting caused the mini-strokes, but they also have not ruled it out.
Oh poor thing. I hope they can find a way to bring her health back. Stay strong Doug. You're doing great and your faith and hard work will be rewarded!
Sounds to me like her BP went stratospheric and any blood vessels that were thin reached a breaking point. Small TIA's could randomly occur after that as I'm sure memories of that event would cause continued spikes.
Â
I hope she recovers as best as possible and regains some of her life back, she seems to have a very supportive and loving family.
poor thing I pray for her thats just awful
Gosh, that is just awful. I feel for this family so much! To miss out on your newborn and your life with your family while dealing with this horrible condition is just so sad. Keeping your family in my thoughts!
I pray for her recovery, and think we should all pray for Nick Meli, the concealed carry permit holder who confronted the mall spree killer who then went down a staircase, turning away from a crowded Macy's Home Store.
Â
Evil causes bad results. The only justice at Clackamas was that the spree killer committed suicide when he wasn't able to carry out his goal because someone stopped him.
I am not a religious person, but this is a tremendously touching story. My own first-born child is six months old as of yesterday, and I can't imagine the heartbreak not being able to fully enjoy the experience.
Â
When ordinary people do extraordinary things, feats of courage and standing up to threats - it's inspiring. A hero like Vanessa deserves every fighting chance to overcome her condition. The world could use a few more people like her.
Praying for Vanessa & her family that she'll fully recover & speak again.
Very sad, and particularly for the new baby girl. I hope the mother can recover, her baby needs her.
We tend to forget about these stories a little when a new tragedy occurs, and the fact that there are real victims and real families coping. Â Hopefully he has a lot of support to draw strength from, as well as his faith. Â We'll pray for them too.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Ogden family.
I would bet the fear and anxiety of the time would have shot her blood pressure through the roof and if she had any weaknesses in any of the tiny blood vessels in her brain that could easily have caused the mini-strokes. Just a real tragedy not just for the victims who were shot but for all the people involved.
His faith was tested? Why? Did he think being a person of faith meant nothing bad would happen to him? Way to put words into his mouth.
Â
Â
Our prayers to you and your family,
First off, sorry to hear about this woman's condition. But, to say "They can't say for certain if the shooting caused the mini-strokes, but they also have not ruled it out," is very sad.  Once again the anti gun people of this world will do any thing to point out how bad guns are.  Was this young lady shot at? The article said no she was not.  So, how can any one say this horrible crime is possible related to her current medical issue? You can't. Â
Â
It is time that the the anti gun people stop blaming guns. Â Maybe her health is poor? Â Maybe she the strokes are a result of her pregnancy? Is it possible for the liberal news media to report on story and not blame a gun? Â Please, let's at least look into the medical facts before jumping to any conclusions.
Â
Lastly, as I said before, I am sorry to hear that this young lady is very sick. Â My heart goes out to her and her family.Â
@Jeff Moser If you already have weakened vessels in your brain, the increased blood pressure from the stress of the incident may very well be the straw that broke the camel's back.  And who's jumping to conclusions blaming this story on the anti gun crowd?  Give it a rest.
@stamperzann  @Jeff Moser A quick google search leads to lots of results about stroke and pregnancy. Threre's a recent study that concluded that the risk of stroke is increased following birth.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1479545/ There has also been an alarming increase in strokes during pregnancy and after childbirth in the recent years.  http://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20110728/strokes-during-pregnancy-childbirth-on-the-rise It is, at the very least, disengenious of the article to put forth theories on the causes, but only focus on the shooting when they do so. The problem is actually a national one and the medical profession is still trying to figure out exactly why this is happening, they have theories of course, but are still working on it.  I hope they are able to help her and really nail down the causes for these increases soon!  Best wishes to her and her new family!
@cuzsis Well that settles it then, if you can find out info that disproves what the doctor says on the internet,  her doctor's opinion obviously cannot be correct. /sarcasm
@Jeff Moser Oh my God, are you really this arrogant? Doctors can't say whether the shooting caused her condition, but you've got it all figured out? You don't think intense fear couldn't have caused her strokes? Where did you go to medical school? Are your precious guns really worth that much to you that indefending them,  you would basically call this woman and her doctors liars? Because that, in essence, is what you have done. Once again, now I understand why people call them gun nuts.
@justmyopinion @Jeff Moser actually, the Clackamas Mall spree killer gave up his attack when confronted by an armed civilian, Nick Meli. Do you really think that things would have been better had Mr. Meli been unarmed and the murderer free to kill 20 or 30 people?
Â
@justmyopinion, it isn't the firearms, the club, the knife. It is the intent of the person wielding it. One person came to the Clackamas Mall determined to kill as many people as possible; another came to the mall planning to shop and brought his concealed carry firearm as he normally did - and when he brought out his firearm he was determined to save as many lives as possible, at the risk of his own.
Â
You should be ashamed of yourself.
@Yakima Belle Wow, you certainly put a lot of words in my mouth. Maybe you need to brush up on your reading comprehension. I have NO Problem with licensed, responsible gun owners. I have a problem with gun nuts like the OP who make terrible accusations about this poor woman's medical condition in defense of his gun. So, why don't you go back and re-read my post and find someone else to lecture. I certainly am not ashamed of myself because I called someone who is obviously more concerned about his keeping his gun than he is with the truth a gun nut.
Vanessa was a hero. Â Perhaps in addition to the TIAs, PTSD? Â At any rate, she deserves the best medical treatment & the most support there is. Â Hang in there, Vanessa, it *will* get better! Â And Doug, bless your heart for your faith in her! Â Many who do not know you will say prayers for you both!
I will keep your family in our prayers.Â
My thoughts are with this beautiful family, and especially their children- I pray that their mommy is able to come home to them soon.Â
Prayers for Vanessa.
I am so sorry - my thoughts are with you and yours.
