Ilwaco fishing family struggles against waves of bad news

ILWACO, Wash. – A Washington state family is at the breaking point after a series of tragedies and the latest round of bad news has hit them especially hard.
“It’s all… happened so quickly,” Bea Shedore said.
In 2011, Bea’s husband Mike was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, rendering the long-time fisherman into a dependent who must type his words into a computer to communicate.
In 2012, his fishing boat, the Two Mikes, named for father and son, was involved in an accident and sank while employees were at the helm. The family’s life savings and economic stability sank along with it.
"I have to depend on people for everything. I was independent,” Mike tapped out on his computer when KATU News talked to him in July of 2012.
This past fall, Mike suffered a heart attack and had more medical complications. He is now in a care facility.
Then last month, during Christmas break, young Mikey, age 6, complained of pain in his back. The heart-breaking diagnosis: Leukemia.
Bea has been by his side in the hospital for a week as he undergoes blood draws and sits in a hospital bed, an IV dripping nearby. Mikey struggles to walk.
"I feel so helpless because you want to do everything to make him better, but you can't,” Bea said.
Bea had been hoping for a respite from the bad news piling up against her family. "New Years I prayed: 'Please, God, let this be a good year.' This was like [January] 8th when it happened,” she said.
"I'm falling apart, but I gotta be strong for everybody,” Bea added. She is also taking care of twin babies, which Mikey was helping with before he fell ill.
Mikey is going through treatments twice a week for a month, but they expect he'll be dealing with his cancer for more than three years.
The Shedore's say their community in Ilwaco has stepped up to help them out by starting a donation account at the Bank of the Pacific and creating a benefit to help the family financially.
There is also a Facebook page dedicated to Mikey’s struggle with cancer.
My thanks to KOMO for running this sad, but amazing story about a family who has really been given so many challenges. I agree with neets458, that if we all could donate just $10.00 they would be overwhelmed with financial help! I will! WILL YOU? Click on the two highlighted locations in the story above to learn more about this family and how people are planning to help! THANKS ALL!

Problem Solvers, I think this family can use a helping hand. I am willing to donate what I can. How about it? Anyone else in??
If there's strength generated from prayers, than a lot of strength is flowing to this family right now. Hopefully, that will make all the difference. It is said, that everything happens for a reason. That something good will come from the trials you face in life. I don't know if that's entirely true, but it helps to get through tough times. My family has been through some tough times lately as well (if money can fix it it isn't a problem!) and I have yet to find "the reason" that helps me understand. But I still have hope that one day I'll see a reason for all of this. I hope the same for you, stay strong, don't give up, and pray. Wondrous things can happen.
My heart & prayers go out to this family to get through all their hardships. God bless.
I have no problems. Good luck to this family!
Praying for this family. So heartbreaking and makes me so grateful for all that I have.
My ex's mother died from ALS and I have lymphoma. My heart breaks for Mike and Mikey. Â
@Northend I'm so sorry.  Our friend just had a recurrence of lymphoma and ultimately a stem cell transplant with his own harvested cells.  Maybe that's a possibility for you too, to manage your disease.  All the best to you and yours.
Wow - when it rains, it pours as the saying goes. God Bless this woman and her family. I don't know her or the family but I pray for them all. I haven't been through this exact thing but something similar years ago, several family members all hospitalized with serious illnesses nearly all within a few months of each other. LIfe is tough sometimes.
Bea, I feel for you and everything you are going through. I can't imagine having a husband in a care facility, a child with cancer and twin babies to take care of. Please stay strong and don't forget to take a few minutes for yourself every now and again.
I think I can stop talking about my petty problems now. I really hope everything works out for them!
@robmo I can say the same for myself and my petty problems. Yes. Nothing like a little perspective to get out of Poor Me Syndrome.
@robmo Nothing like perspective, huh? Somehow, the fact that I was pissed that Starbucks screwed up my morning latte seems so....petty.Â
God will not give you more than you can handle. Be strong. May our Lord Jesus be with you and your family in these trying times.
God bless.
Stay strong, you have made it this far. Don't ever give up.Â

I dedicate the song If your going through hell by Rodney Atkins to you. I will keep you in my prays.Â

The best of luck to you and your family. Your troubles make mine seem trivial.
How horrible... talk about kicking you while you're down. :( My thougts and prayers are with Mikey and your family. Stay strong.
