Alaska ferry's return delayed again
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - There's another delay for the state ferry Columbia's return after a major overhaul.
The Columbia had been set to return to service on Friday from Bellingham, Wash.
But state transportation officials say the vessel will remain out of service possibly until Wednesday.
The Columbia had originally been scheduled to resume sailing on May 9.
Officials say the latest delay is necessary to meet Coast Guard safety standards and receive a Coast Guard certificate of inspection.
Officials say Columbia passengers won't be affected by the delay because the ferry Matanuska will stay on the Bellingham run for an additional week.
But Matanuska passengers set to sail from Prince Rupert, British Columbia, will be affected.
Alaska transportation officials are exploring options for those passengers.
