Jones Soda introduces political pop culture
SEATTLE -- There was ketchup for GW. Dwight donned cereal. And before Kennedy licked Nixon, Good Humor put them both on ice cream bars.
Today's top candidates are popping up on pop bottles.
On Wednesday the local company that introduced the world to Turkey and Gravy soda uncorked a new marketing brainstorm -- Campaign Cola.
Jones Soda unveiled Obama's Yes We Can Cola as well as the Pure McCain Cola, which is made with pure cane sugar and, according to the label, "100-percent patriot spirit."
In a room painted the shade of Jones Soda's Berry Lemonade flavor, CEO Stephen Jones told KOMO News the company's timing for releasing the three faces of Campaign Cola is impeccable.
Yes, there's another bottle -- Capitol Hillary Cola. Despite Clinton's fizzling campaign, Jones said he doesn't think sales of her cola will fall flat.
You can only buy the pop on line at CampaignCola.com. Every purchase will count as a vote for a presidential candidate. Jones plans to update the votes every 15 minutes.
And no need to bottle up your political beliefs; the site also offers a forum for debate.
Since the Seattle-based company went national, it aimed to keep up with market demand. It develops a wide range of flavors but had never produced a cola product before.
As a joke, the Jones Soda staff made a fourth bottle featuring the face of political humorist and faux candidate Stephen Colbert. The pop team calls it Stephen Colbert Americola.
It's not for sale; it's for laughs. The Jones team mailed Colbert a case of his own soda every day for 15 days, but hasn't received a response.
When asked which of the three campaign colas available online is the best tasting, Jones said the taste is the same no matter whose face is on the bottle.
