FIFE, Wash. -- Two suspected car thieves were critically hurt when they crashed a stolen car on I-5 while attempting to elude police.
Auburn police Commander Mike Hiram said an officer spotted the car getting onto Highway 18 just before midnight.
The officer followed while waiting for backup and turned on his lights and siren after the suspected thieves merged onto southbound I-5 near the Federal Way truck scales.
The driver of the stolen car sped off, reaching speeds of 100 mph, Hiram said.
As officers were backing off the chase in Fife, the driver lost control while changing lanes and rolled the car over. Both men were ejected from the car.
Medics took the two men to a local hospital where they were listed in critical condition. No one else was hurt, but another car did sustain some damage from flying debris, Hiram said.
The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for several hours through the night for the crash investigation but reopened around 5 a.m.

I bet their parents wonât be letting them play together any more.Â
Good. Except we have to pay their hospital bills.
Â
Dumb and dumber trying to take their selves out of the gene pool, they even failed at that.
Thank you people, you've shown me that Christianity is obviously on it's way to dead. Ok with me, I abhor organized religion because in the end it's just another means of one human being controlling another. Still, I think that non violent revolutionary guy had some good ideas and a good heart. Don't see much evidence of followers of Christ here.Â
Problem solved.
Not yet, they'll be back out on the streets sooner or later.
Serves you right, you damn punks! I feel sorry for the car as well as its owner though.
Hahahahahaha. Karma works. Hey, look on the bright side, at the very least, these two tools will have a lot of nice time spent in the hospital as a parting gift for their work as car thieves. I'm just glad they only managed to take themselves out and not hit some family.
Sounds like sweet Karma to me!

Why would they steal that car?
@Komo206 Believe it or not, the older Monte Carlo (and other GM variants) has a following. The parts value of that car was probably substantial.
Too bad about the car... Glad no troopers were hurt.
A little bondo and new glass and it should be better than new.
It will buff out.
When I was a kid a captured car thief got 3-5 in Monroe prison. There were very little car theft.. We didn't even lock the car when we went into Seattle. The idea of locking it in our own driveway would have been considered a joke. Now the coppers don't even bother to look for the car. My neighbor has had his stolen 3 times and we live in a pretty safe suburban neighborhood. Glad these guys got what was coming to them but if they had gotten away no one would be looking for them and they would be on the prowl again. If they were caught without crashing they would be put on probation. Car theft is not considered a very bad offense anymore by the gov't tall foreheads.
@lin Where and when did you grow up? Seattle PD used to just take kids home to their parents for stealing cars in the 60's and 70's...it wasn't until 1997 that they even started talking about a 3 strikes car theft= prison rule of thumb. Maybe for running from the cops and causing a dangerous chase the consequences would be greater, but just for stealing cars, they didn't do much of anything, unless you were already a hardened felon or possibly a minority pre-1960's. Im sure im much younger than you but my uncles and their friends are always talking about how you could never get away with "the crap they pulled as kids" these days. A kid stole a car at my high school in 2002 and he was sent to 2 1/2 years in juvie...so it must very quite a bit from place to place and person to person.
@lin car stolen 3 times, and you say you live in a safe neighborhood??? It's only a matter of a few steps from the car in the driveway to the front door, my friend...
@boeman @lin "paranoia, paranoia, everybody's comming to get me..."
Too bad they weren't just taken to the morgue.............
I hope I don't slip on my tears.
why bother hospitalizing them? let'em die
It does seem like such a waste of EMS resources.
awesome..hopefully the rest of their lives will be full of pain and misery. Â
Only injured... dammit... should have just let the thieves rot on the side of the road...now we have to pay to 'save' them... if you ask me we would have been better off without them surviving....
The classic cars are more likely to be able to reach 100 MPH than today's "modern" no horsepower cars.Â
@mustang sally Um...no. Even today's crappy cars are faster than anything built in the late 70s or 80s.Â
Several years ago a guy held-up a 7-11 in Bellingham and as he was running away he was hit by a car. His injuries were such that he will never have children. I hope for the same outcome here.
Dam that old Oldsmobile can do a 100 mph?
@Hehateme Depending on equipment yeah, it probably could crack 100 MPH. But at 30+ years old, I bet the handling could be described as "entertaining". Throw a couple of scared dipsticks behind the wheel and this outcome is no surprise.
@Hehateme It's a Monte Carlo, and yes, it can.
@Hehateme A Monte Carlo SS. I had one that hit 165 mph. Stock.
@Hehateme Probably more likely to do 100 than some of today's cars. LOL.
YES! another peice of C#*P Chevrolet and two idiots off the road, it's going to be a good day!
Â
@signboy It's a classic 80's vintage Monte Carlo; not a piece of crap. Becoming more collectible by the day. There's no accounting for lack of taste and discernment, however.
Its a classic alright , a classic example of what not to buy back in the day. Why don't we start with the doors, they were like ten ton weights on tiny hinges that lasted about 6 months, my taste well lets just say I'm well above any pile that GM put out in the 70s or 80s. My old man kept buying these detroit tu#s and I had a party for him when he finally wised up and bought something that would last him at least 10 years. Collectable ? sure for the junk man or making the parts guy rich. Once again a good chevy is a dead or recycled Chevy! Why do you think GM needed a bailout? their crap!!
@signboy you're so cool!  Call me when your Kia lasts 30 years.
And now the public will be stuck with their medical bills.
@Count_Screamalot and the cost of their trial, and (hopefully?) housing them for a long time to come...dang it
They should have been left on the side of the road.
Now that's a good idea. Make seat belts inoperable during a car theft.
@Klondiko they just stole a car and are running from the law. Do you really think that they are going to make sure they are wearing their seat belts? It would only slow they down when they bail (or are thrown) out...Besides, the seat belt interferes with the gun in you waistband.....
that poor car it looks like it was a classic car to bad, for the person I hope it will be one less car thief off the street!
I feel bad for the car owner and I hope he had insurance after they rolled the car. I donât have much sympathy for the âsuspectedâ car thieves. Or anyone dumb enough to run from the police and the injuries the receive from their reckless decisions.
Agree about the car owner. I have no sympathy for these thieves and hope they don't live......ugly, but that's how I feel. They were endangering the public with their stupidity! Thank goodness no one else was hurt.
In this case...stupidity did hurt ;)
Defintely not a 100 mph vehicle.Â
@silverado sure it was a monte carlo was used in nascar in its time should top a 100+ easy.
This car is not a 100 mph car. A NASCAR modified Monte Carlo is not even close to being stock.
@70MonteCarlo  @silverado Drove one in the 80's, sweet smooth ride even on rough roads and DEFINITELY could go 120 if you just said please.
@silverado Mine can do 120+, easily.Â
@nunof uors  @silverado A well maintained Monte Carlo can hold in excess if 100, that does not look like it was a well maintained one where there is no damage from the wreck.
