SEATTLE - A woman is in critical condition after her small car slammed into a garbage truck Thursday morning on the Fourth Avenue South Bridge.

The driver of the garbage truck also suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Emergency crews shut down all lanes of the bridge as they worked to pull the victims from their vehicles at about 6:45 a.m. Thursday.

Kyle Moore of the Seattle Fire Department said the 40-year-old woman had to be cut from the mangled remains of her small car after she crashed into the garbage truck. The rescue took about 15 minutes.

The garbage truck driver, a 36-year-old man, also had to be extricated from his vehicle.

Wreckage was strewn throughout the southbound lane of the bridge.

Witnesses told police that the woman veered across the center line and crashed head-on into the truck.

The bridge remains closed as officials continue to investigate the crash.
