BONNEY LAKE, Wash. -- The State Patrol is seeking witnesses who saw what led up to a wrong way crash that killed two people about 5:45 Friday morning on Highway 410.

If you have any information or know someone who does, please contact Detective Sergeant Jerry Cooper at (360) 805-1192 or Detective Curt Ladines at (360) 805-1160.

Detectives with the Washington State Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).say a blue 2013 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling eastbound on 410 when the vehicle sideswiped the right side guardrail.

The pickup veered left striking and going over the raised Jersey barrier, then entered the westbound lanes where it collided with a gray 2002 Ford Focus. Both vehicles were subsequently struck by a red 2004 Kenworth dump truck towing a dump trailer. The truck and trailer were loaded with gravel.

A pickup truck driver lost control and collided with an oncoming car. A loaded gravel truck then slammed into both vehicles.

The drivers of the pickup, Richard Smith, 72, of Renton, and car, David Maynard, 41, of Bonney Lake died at the scene.

The man driving the dump truck was uninjured.

Speed may have been a factor in the crash, but that remains under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to be involved.

A trooper said Friday it appears the dump truck driver did not have time to stop or avoid the collision.
