2 men, 1 dog rescued from boat adrift in Penn Cove

COUPEVILLE, Wash. (AP) - The Coast Guard has rescued two men and a dog from a small boat blown away from a Whidbey Island shore in 45 mph winds.
Petty Officer Nate Littlejohn says a helicopter dispatched to the scene Monday found the men and dog adrift in an 18-foot boat a mile offshore with no engine, sail or other means of propulsion.
All three were hoisted to safety. Littlejohn says the men were checked at a local hospital and released.
The men said they had been blown away from the shore while trying to trailer the boat.

I know there's waste in every government program... there has been since ancient Babylon and will be long after the United States is dust. But if there is a tax dollar better spent than the money we invest in the USCG, I don't know what it is.
And that's coming from an old Army tanker and combat veteran, ok? One of my best buddies has just made Warrant Officer in the Coasties, and I've seen him pulling his [remaining] hair out every time Congress shorts the USCG's funding for some brand new whizz-bang thing the Navy or Air Force wants. Right now, about half the USCG cutters in service are 30+ years old and they were right in the middle of a major fleet upgrade, but then Congress decided that the Navy needed a new carrier instead so *poof* went the funding. With at least three keels laid that the Coasties now don't have the money to complete.
Thanks Tea Party!Â
First off, the dog tried warned them, he was against the idea from the start. The skipper and his first mate said; the boat doesn't leak, the cooler is full of beer, we've nothing better to do, and besides, what could possibly go wrong?
Just sit right back, and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip.
That started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship.
@semprecoraggio Ah the memories of sitting down to that show as a kid :)
@Thunder @semprecoraggio Ditto...
It helps to be smarter than the thing you are messing with. Nice job Coast Guard!Â
