2-year sentence for drunk driver who killed bicyclist

KENNEWICK, Wash. - A driver who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol was sentenced Thursday in Kennewick to more than two years in prison.

The Tri-City Herald reports 21-year-old David Lee Rivera Godinez of Prosser killed Jared Carr in May 2012 near Prosser as he was completing a 250-mile bicycle training ride at night.

Godinez told police he swerved to avoid a skunk and lost control of his car, smashing into Carr, two phone poles and a line of trees. Carr died at the scene. Police said his bicycle was fully equipped for nighttime riding.

Carr's wife was waiting for him in Richland and knew something was wrong when he didn't arrive.

Responding officers report smelling alcohol on Godinez and took him in for blood analysis.
