SEATTLE (AP) - The state Transportation Department says the latest repair work in April has stopped the settling of the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle.

Workers strengthened four columns that settled nearly 6 inches since the 2001 Nisqually earthquake.

A department official, Ron Paananen, says the elevated stretch of Highway 99 along the Seattle waterfront is vulnerable to another quake and officials are planning to tear it down in 2012.

The viaduct is closed for inspection every six months, and the next inspection is scheduled for October.
