RENTON, Wash. - A 21-year-old Renton man was killed early Friday when his car slammed into a utility pole at high speed, police said.

Officers and medics responded to the scene, in the 1100 block of South Carr Road, at about 2:20 a.m. after receiving a report of a serious crash.

A witness told investigators that the car was heading west at high speed when it veered off the roadway and crashed into a utility pole.

The 21-year-old driver was the only one in the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A utility crew had to shut off power before the body could be removed.

The driver's name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Speed appears to have been a factor in this accident, said Cmdr. Clark Wilcox of the Renton police. He said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors.

South Carr Road near Mill Avenue will be closed until at least 7 a.m. during the crash investigation and cleanup.
