By KOMO Staff
RENTON - An 18-year-old driver and her four teenage passengers were injured, some of them critically, when the driver lost control of the vehicle early Sunday and flipped it over multiple times on Interstate 405, State Patrol troopers said.
All five of the occupants of the 1990 Ford Explorer were partially or completely thrown from the vehicle, including one passenger was trapped underneath the vehicle when the it landed directly on top of him. The driver, Christine Elkins, 18, of Auburn, initially said someone in the back seat tried to choke her, causing the accident. But troopers said that was later proved to be untrue and the driver will be booked on suspicion of DUI and four counts of vehicular assault after she is released from the hospital. Troopers said they were called to the rollover accident, near the intersection of State Route 900, at about 3:45 a.m. A Washington State Patrol sergeant who was one of the first on the scene spotted the passenger underneath the vehicle and took immediate action. With help from some good Samaritans who had stopped at the scene, the vehicle was lifted off the trapped man and he was pulled to safety. A second ejected passenger was found nearly unconscious in the bushes off of the interstate with the assistance of a Tukwila Police K-9 unit. Those two, the driver and other passengers were treated at the scene by medics and rushed to the hospital. The State Patrol listed the injuries listed to the passengers as: - A 14-year-old female from Seatac sustained a broken arm. - An 18-year-old male from Kent, suffered neck and back injuries, with deep cuts and scrapes. - A 16-year-old male from Kent, susatined cuts and scrapes. - A 16-year-old male, hometown unknown, suffered neck and back injuries. The driver is currently listed in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and will be booked into the King County Jail after she is released, troopers said. All lanes of I-405 at the accident scene were closed for two or three hours after the rollover. |
