Murder victim's son describes strange encounter

PASCO, Wash. - A son of the woman who fell victim to a gruesome murder says he recalls an encounter with someone who resembles the suspect in his mother's death.
Investigators said Araceli Camacho Gomez was stabbed multiple times in the chest and her nearly full-term baby was cut from her womb. Her body was found early Saturday in a Kennewick park. Her baby is on life support at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. Phiengchai Sisouvanh, 23, of Kennewick has been charged with aggravated murder in the first degree in her death. Gomez's eldest son, who is 10 years old, described to KEPR-TV an encounter with a woman whom he said resembles Sisouvanh. The boy said he was with his mother when an Asian woman approached them at a Pasco bus stop near their home on Friday morning. "We didn't know (her) and she just said 'are you having a baby?' And my mom said 'yeah,'" said the boy, who KOMO News has chosen not to identify by name due to his young age. "She told us 'do you want some rope? 'Cause I have some rope for baby,'" he said. Gomez's son said he was confused by the stranger's offer for rope. Maria Durrant, a friend of the family, said the lady also offered Gomez baby clothes. The woman also asked for their address and phone number, Gomez's son added. After running errands with his dad, the boy and his family came back to their Pasco home to find lights on, the door open and no one home. "Then my dad went to the Rite Aid to get some medicine for my little sister and then when we came back, (my mom) wasn't there," he said. The family is devastated by the gruesome circumstances surrounding Gomez's death, and the series of unanswered questions it has left behind. Gomez's two children are being taken care of by friends of the family as well as their father, Juan Campos Felipe, who was engaged to the victim. According to those close to the family, Gomez's two young children are confused and wondering why their mother isn't around. Felipe is also the father of the baby Gomez was carrying at the time of her death. "They were waiting until the baby was born to get married," a friend of the family said. "(They moved here) to have a better life." |
