NEWCASTLE - Heavy rains sent a mudflow oozing through a new housing development and an adjacent neighborhood Thursday morning as crews scrambled to keep the muck from flowing into homes.

Video footage from KOMO News' helicopter Air 4 shows about two inches of mud and water flowing through streets in the development, on 169th Avenue SE, which is still under construction.

Mud and water ooze through the streets of the development.
From there the river of mud poured through the streets of another neighborhood downhill from the construction site.

"You know what it looked like, - you know those scenes from the Midwest, where the levees broke and the water came rushing down - I mean it was going that fast," said Ray Oen, who shot video of the scene from his front porch.

Naomi Neher, a construction worker said, "The whole wall, just a sheet of water (was) coming down on us."

She said she and her co-workers took cover in a shelter, but the water just came gushing over the walls. Then she looked in disbelief as the mudflow washed one car down the road into another car.

"It's the most amazing thing I've ever seen," she said.

Crews shovel mud and water from the driveway and garage of a new home.
Emergency vehicles responded and plowed their way through the muddy streets under gray, rainy skies.

The mud and water flowed into the front yards of two newly constructed homes, and crews are shoveling back the flow to prevent it from inundating the garages of the two homes.

Crews also were using construction equipment to remove the mud from other streets in the development.

The mudflow appeared to originate on a newly cleared hillslide destined for future home construction as persistent thunderstorms rumbled through the region with rain and hail.

There were no damage reports available.
