MOUNTLAKE TERRACE - Two people were injured when fire broke out in their home as they were sleeping Thursday morning.

Neighbors reported flames coming from the rear of the split-entry house in the 22900 block of 41st Place West at about 7:40 a.m.

"The neighbors could also hear the residents - a man and a woman - yelling for help," said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1, which serves Mountlake Terrace.

The couple made it out the front door just as firefighters arrived from Station 18, which is just a few blocks away, Hynes said.

The pair said they were awakened by a loud noise and discovered the fire when they went to investigate.

"They were both exposed to smoke and flames as they made their way to the front door," Hynes said.

Firefighters transported the man and woman to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. There were no other injuries.

Two dogs escaped from the fire. A cat was still missing.

Firefighters from Fire District 1, Lynnwood, Edmonds and Northshore responded and quickly brought the fire under control.

Investigators have determined the fire was accidental and started in the kitchen in the area around the refrigerator. The damage is estimated at $175,000. The homeowners have insurance.

"Most of the fire damage is in the kitchen. The rest of the house sustained heavy smoke and heat damage," Hynes said.

The house is uninhabitable. The homeowners are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
