Firework blaze guts home after medical emergency

By KOMO Staff

PARKLAND - Fireworks are being blamed for a blaze that destroyed a Parkland home only an hour after its occupant was taken to the hospital with a medical emergency.

Central Pierce Fire & Rescue personnel first went to the one-story home at about 2 a.m. Saturday to respond to a medical aid call. Medics transported the resident to the hospital for treatment.

An hour later they got another 911 call to the same home, in the 700 block of 132nd Street South, and found heavy flames and smoke coming from the wood frame structure.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze, but the house was a total loss, officials said.

An investigation determined that the blaze was sparked by a firework that was shot through the home's open window after the occupant was taken to the hospital.

A second person who lives at the home was not there, and it's believed that person accompanied the other resident to the hospital.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents find temporary housing.
