SEATTLE (AP) - The University of Washington Foundation has completed its biggest fundraising campaign in university history.

The university announced Thursday that the campaign brought in $2.68 billion during the past eight years. According to the Council for Aid to Education, the UW is the third most successful fundraiser among public universities in the United States. Among all public and private universities, UW ranks 12th in five-year fundraising averages.

More than 293,000 donors contributed to the campaign that just ended. The campaign's largest donor was the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which gave more than $400 million.

Five new buildings will result from the campaign, including some that have already been built. The new buildings include the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering and William H. Gates Hall to house the Law School.
