Man caught at border arraigned in Yakima killing

By Associated Press

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - A man who was arrested entering the country from Mexico has been arraigned in a gang killing in Yakima in 2001.

Twenty-six-year-old Salvador Nava Alvarez was arraigned Thursday on charges of first-degree murder, assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. He remains in jail with bail set at $500,000 pending trial Sept. 2.

Nava Alvarez was arrested earlier this month in El Paso, Texas, as he tried to enter the United States. He had been sought since the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Antone Eugene "Tony" Masovero on May 12, 2001.

Investigators believe Masovero was in the Norteno gang and was slain in retaliation for the killing of a member of the rival Surenos.
