MASON COUNTY, Wash. -- Ronda Petty is in so much pain that she can barely walk.

Petty was carrying groceries to her RV outside her home in Skokomish Nation when a Rottweiler knocked her down from behind and started attacking.

"And then grabbed my arm first and just started ripping it like an old rag doll," said Petty. "And I think it just ripped my arm right out, and he went for the stomach, the hips."

Petty's screams finally alerted a teenage neighbor next door who helped scare the dog away.

Petty was left with deep bite wounds on her shoulder, waist and hip. But she knows things could have turned out much worse if the teen hadn't come to her aid.

"A couple more bites, I would have passed out. I probably would have died, because nobody (else) heard me screaming," she said.

The dog, Spike, lives across the street with his owner, Henrietta Smith.

Smith said the Rottweiler had somehow managed to free itself from its chain that day. Smith was at home when Petty was attacked, but said she didn't hear the screams that were coming from across the street.

The dog is currently being held at Shelton Veterinary Hospital to be checked for rabies. Smith has already decided to have her dog put to sleep so that no one else is attacked.

But Petty fears Smith will have a change of heart and ask the tribal council to spare her dog's life.

"Because you can do that. You can go to tribal court and ask for something not to be done," she said.

Barring any last-minute objections from tribal elders, Spike is scheduled to be put down on July 25.
