Couple sentenced in overdose death of baby son
SAN DIEGO - A Shelton couple who gave their fussy infant son a deadly concoction of adult medications were sentenced to two years in prison Friday.

The sentencing, in a San Diego, Calif., courtroom means Thomas and Lorrie Boettger will be released from custody immediately, since they have already spent 16 months in jail and will receive credit for time served, a judge said.

The couple will be placed on parole for up to four years.

The Boettgers, both 39, were arrested after their 6-month-old son, Thomas Boettger II, died while they were visiting San Diego in October 2006. The cause was acute intoxication from an antihistamine and a sleeping aid.

The couple originally was charged with second-degree murder in the baby's death. They maintained they did not intend to harm the child but only wanted to alleviate his pain by dosing him with Unisom, Benadryl and Zantac.

Last month, Lorrie Boettger pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and her husband pleaded guilty to felony child abuse causing great bodily injury.

They had faced 15 years to life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.
