BURIEN - A local block watch captain tried to take on taggers who were covered a large fence in her neighborhood with graffiti - but found a huge company in her way.

The fence, which had become a terrible eyesore, is owned by Comcast. But whenever Marylou Grinols called the company, she got the brush-off.

They told her "we'll get in touch with the supervisor, and that's all we can do right now more or less attitude," Grinols said.

Meanwhile, the graffiti kept getting worse - and worse.

"I don't know what half this stuff means, but I know it doesn't mean 'have a nice day,'" she says.

Meanwhile, other business owners in the neighborhood were concerned that the graffiti-covered fence was becoming a magnet for taggers, encouraging them to return again and again.

"You know, I spend 18 hours a day here," said Joe Salle, who runs a nearby grocery store and makes sure to paint over any graffiti that appears on his building. "We don't want to look at this stuff."

Finally, after a month, Grinols gave up and called the KOMO News Problem Solvers, who in turn contacted Comcast.

An hour later, Comcast bought paint and had a crew on the way to cover the blight.

"The graffiti's been here for weeks, but it took less than an hour to clean it up," she said. "So what was the hold-up? ... It could have been done the day I called."

Comcast has apologized, and promises to be a better neighbor.

"It's an embarrassment to us as a company, and that we'll pledge to resolve this and keep after it," said Steve Kipp of Comcast.

He said Comcast will do more than paint over any new graffiti. The company also plans to add surveillance cameras and other measures to keep taggers away.
