REDMOND - A woman who was gunned down Tuesday morning by her estranged husband has been identified as Mellisa Batten, 36, of Redmond, said the King County Medical Examiner.

Her estranged husband, who turned the weapon on himself after killing her, has been identified as Joseph Batten, also 36, of Redmond.

Mellisa Batten died after she was shot eight times with a 9mm handgun, said police spokesman Jim Bove.

Joseph Batten died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

It all happened at an apartment complex in the 4300 block of 156th Avenue Northeast just after 9 a.m. Tuesday. Police found the man and woman dead in the parking lot.

Another gun - a .357-caliber pistol - was found in the dead man's waistband, Bove said.

Police say it appears no one saw the actual confrontation.

Officials said the woman was living with a friend at the apartment complex and was in the process of filing for divorce.

She was leaving for her job at Microsoft when her husband caught up with her in the parking lot and opened fire.
