FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- One person was killed in a shooting outside Lakota Middle School on Thursday evening.
Police spokesperson Cathy Schrock said a gunman riding with a group of other men in a black SUV shot another 26-year-old man in the school's parking lot before speeding off around 8:20 p.m.
The victim, whose name has not been released, died just minutes later. The gunman remains at large.
A football practice for the Federal Way Hawks, a club team, was just ending at the school when the shooting took place, but none of the players were hurt.
Investigators believe the shooting was not a random incident as the getaway car was seen circling the parking lot during football practice for the past several days.
It is not known whether the victim was at the school to pick up a child.
About 15 or 20 people witnessed the shooting, and all of them are being interviewed, Federal Way police said.
Kenneth and Bertha Neal, who live near the school, said they were startled by the gunshot and the ensuing commotion.
"I was lying on the couch, watching TV and I heard this little 'pop.' And then I heard a car spin off and the kids started hollering," said Bertha
"First I thought it was a big fight, you know, all the kids fighting," Kenneth said.
The Neals said they ran out of their home and saw that someone had been shot.
"A guy laying flat on the ground on his back, and all the people upset," said Kenneth.
"Then there were a couple of the football parents performing CPR," Bertha said.
The investigation is ongoing. Police are questioning a number of witnesses.
Police are searching for the gunman and up to three other men who may have been in the getaway car. A description was not available.
The Federal Way Police Department encourages anyone who has any information about the shooting to contact Detective Brigit Clary at 253-835-6832 or call 911.
