Kent food bank regains lifeline, for now
By Matt Markovich
KENT, Wash. -- An old, beat-up pickup truck right out of 'Sanford and Son' burned to a crisp on Monday night. It might not sound like big news, but for a small local food bank it was everything.
R. Place of Refuge, a food bank and food delivery service, lost its only delivery truck in a matter of minutes. "It was a pop. Next thing you know, it was a bunch of smoke and it was (in) flames," said Kelly Carroll, founder of R. Place of Refuge. No one was hurt the blaze, but Carroll wasn't sure all the damage had been done. "We have hurt hearts, just knowing that there are hundreds of families that look forward to this truck pulling up," she said. But thankfully, the families won't have to go without. KOMO News contacted Penske Truck Leasing, and the company donated a flatbed truck to keep food flowing for a week. The food bank also received $200 to help fuel the big truck. "This can't be happening," said Carroll, excitedly, "Miracles happen!" And the donated frozen foods that had been awaiting delivery finally got under way. "It's the life for people, their daily essentials," Carroll said. R. Place of Refuge services 500 needy family with food, one act of random kindness at a time. "If a random act of kindness could happen for us. We a truly living the legacy of what we promote that it is a full circle; that the love that we give out will come back to us," said Carroll. And Carroll is a big believer of paying it forward. R Place of refuge relies solely on donations. "Someone might think its just a truck, but to R. Place, it's the lifeline because we are a delivery service," she said. "It's people like you and the community that make it all happen. So I'm glad you guys exist." For one more week, the families won't have to go without. In the meantime, the Problem Solvers are working on a long-term solution. |
