Police vehicles surround a house where a woman and her young daughter were murdered.
KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) - A Benton City teenager will be tried as an adult in the slaying of his mother last year.
Donald Schalchlin, 16, faces arraignment this week in Benton County Superior Court on one count of first-degree murder in the Dec. 19 death of 41-year-old Ellen "Lori" Schalchlin.
She and her 13-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, were stabbed to death in their home.
Judge Craig Matheson ruled Monday that Donald Schalchlin should be tried as an adult, saying the interest of public safety outweighed Schalchlin's needs for treatment. He noted that Schalchlin is an admitted Satan worshipper and has expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler.
If convicted as a juvenile, Schalchlin would be in custody about five years until he's 21. In adult court, he could face 20 to 26 years in prison.
A friend of Donald Schalchlin, Joshua Tucker, earlier pleaded guilty in adult court to two counts of first-degree murder.
Tucker, who was 16 at the time of the crime, is serving a nearly 41-year prison sentence, and has implicated Schalchlin as an accomplice in the killings.
