TACOMA, Wash. -- The case against a man arrested for possessing materials used to make explosive devices has fizzled.

Kenneth Trice was arrested after his boss found a 10-pound bag of fertilizer, lighter fluid, matches and small bottles filled with chemicals in his work locker on Tuesday.

Trice, 29, was booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of possessing chemicals used to make explosive devices as well as resisting arrest. But prosecutors on Wednesday said they need more to make a case and released Trice.

Investigators said the type of fertilizer found in Trice's possession lacked ammonium nitrate, the chemical needed to make bombs.

Trice's boss at Graymont Western U.S. Incorporated decided to search his locker after employees told him Trice had been acting suspiciously. Inside he found the upper shelf lined with bottles of chemicals, some of which had already been mixed together.

When the lime and stone company alerted police, officers went to Trice's home where he lives with his parents and arrested him. Investigators searched the home, but none of the evidence they collected proved to be bomb-making material.

Those who are familiar with Trice don't know what to make of the bizarre situation.

"So we don't know if it was something that he was playing around with or had specific intent with," said Trice's boss, Paul Liner.

"I don't know why around here. There's nothing to blow up here," said neighbor Viktor Marker.

It is unclear why the fertilizer and the chemicals found in Trice's locker had been mixed together. The material has been sent to a laboratory to be analyzed.

The investigation is ongoing and Trice could be rearrested.
