KING COUNTY, Wash. -- A 24-year-old SeaTac man accused of stabbing his pregnant girlfriend has been charged with assault.

Prosecutors say Carlos Alejandro Diaz-Galvin jabbed a utility knife into his girlfriend's chest during an argument at her home in Seattle's Green Lake neighborhood.

According to police reports, Diaz-Galvin's girlfriend arrived home from her first day at a new job Friday to find him drunk. Neighbors came to the woman's assistance after they heard her cry for help, and they helped carry her from the house.

As they did so, Diaz-Galvin rushed the woman -- 5½ months pregnant with his child -- with a knife, stabbing her in the side of her stomach.

Diaz-Galvin then threw a lawn chair at one of the neighbors and fled from the home, located in the 1400 block of North 49th Street. Police arrested him and recovered a knife in the area.

His girlfriend was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where she underwent heart surgery. She and her unborn child were in serious condition Tuesday but expected to survive.

Diaz-Galvin has been charged with first-degree assault and second-degree assault. He also faces a third-degree assault charge for striking a police officer in the groin and a fourth-degree domestic violence charge for punching his girlfriend's daughter.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 2 and is being held in King County Jail on $1 million bail.
