Beacon Hill residents advised to boil water
By KOMO Staff
SEATTLE -- Residents of a 30-block area of Beacon Hill are being asked to not drink the tap water Wednesday unless you boil it first.
A 2-inch water pipe broke Wednesday morning during construction work, knocking out water to a 30-block area, affecting some 460 customers. Although water service was around 10:15 a.m., SPU said it will take until at least 2 p.m. Thursday before tests have been concluded to ensure the water is safe to drink. As a precautionary measure residents in the area are being asked to not use water for drinking or cooking purposes until notified. The affected area is bounded by: Bennett and S. Shelton Streets, to the north; 19th Avenue, to the east; I-5, to the west; and Graham Street, to the south. Area residents are advised that if they must use water from their taps, they should boil it first. Until the tests are done, SPU will be giving away free bottled water -- until 8 p.m. Wednesday night and beginning again at 8 a.m. Thursday -- in the parking lot of Cleveland High School, 5511 15th Ave S. (Corner 15th Ave S. & S. Orcas St.). Look for SPU staff and the "Emergency Water" sign. Here are instructions on how to boil your water, courtesy of the SPU: * Strain the water through either a cheesecloth, coffee filter, or other clean, porous material to remove as many solid particles and dirt as possible; * Bring the water to a rolling boil for 1 minute; * Let the water cool. Pour into a container that has been boiled or sanitized with chlorine bleach; * To preserve the quality of the water, refrigerate the water until use. Customers with questions can call SPU at: 206-684-3000. |
