Orting hires convicted felon as kids' football coach

By KOMO Staff

ORTING, Wash. -- When mothers found out their son's football coach is a convicted felon, they were outraged. It turned out the felon was hired because the city of Orting, which runs the league, never ran a simple background check.

"I can't even describe the horrid feeling of thinking everyday that my child was out on the field with a convicted felon and the city had no idea , nor did they take any steps to check that," said one mother who wished to be identified only as "Generosa."

"Oh boy, lesson learned. Absolutely lesson learned," said Orting Mayor Cheryl Temple.

Temple says the city desperately needed an adult who knew something about football.

"Finally this father stepped up and said 'I'll coach the team.' We said, 'great, get out there and coach. We'll run your background check,'" she said.

And when the background check came back with felony and misdemeanor convictions written up and down the page, the city says the coach was let go immediately.

But the story only gets worse.

Among his 12 felonies, the coach has been convicted on charges of forgery and criminal impersonation, which has parents worried sick. The coach has all of the players' personal information since they were required to fill out registration forms in order to play.

In light of the news, some parents yanked their kids out of football forever.

"I would rather not have my child playing," one such parent said.

The former former coach has not been accused of committing any crimes while acting as the league's coach.

Several city employees have been disciplined.
