Woman assaulted in Wal-Mart restroom

Surveillance footage of the restroom assault suspect

By Tracy Vedder

CHEHALIS - A would-be molester chose a brightly lit store full of surveillance cameras to sexually assault a local woman.

Now police are asking for the public's help in tracking down the suspect in the brazen early-morning attack at a Chehalis Walmart store.

Surveillance camera footage from the store shows the suspect took advantage of every opportunity - picking the time and the place and ignoring all the security cameras in place here.

Now police want him off the street.

From the moment he drove into the store's parking lot, the suspect's actions were suspicious, police say.

Footage from the surveillance tape shows the suspect driving into the Walmart parking lot, driving around, looking for a specific place to park close to the entrance.

Once inside, witnesses told police he hung around the front registers - watching the entrance to the restrooms. Right after a female customer went inside, he followed.

Police say the suspect grabbed the woman. When she screamed, he quickly left.

Although the attack happened about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, the store was brightly lit, and there were both employees and customers inside. There was even a janitor in the men's restroom next door.

One regular customer, Shirley Hunt, says the incident has made her wary.

"I'll definitely be on guard more - be more careful," she says.

Another regular shopper, Wells Hubble, says, "I don't know how someone could do something like this and no one notice."

Police believe this suspect has probably done something like this before, and they want him behind bars.

He is described as a white male about 20 to 25 years old with a shaved head. He was wearing a dark blue T shirt and jeans and driving a silver four-door car.

Chehalis Police Chief Glenn Schaffer is asking anyone who recognizes him from the surveillance camera photos to contact Detective Sgt. McNamara at 360-748-8605.
