VANCOUVER, Wash. – A man was presumed dead Sunday after Vancouver fire officials said he might have drowned in the Columbia River a night earlier.

Authorities got a call about a young man struggling in the water near Frenchman's Bar Park west of Vancouver Lake about 8:15 p.m. Saturday.

Rescuers were at the scene within eight minutes and spent hours searching in vain for the man.

Witnesses said the man was wearing jeans and a T-shirt but no life jacket.

It was not clear if crews planned to resume the search Sunday.

The man's name was not immediately released.
