FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Police are searching for an unidentified woman who abandoned a newborn baby girl at the steps of a church early Sunday morning.

Officers were dispatched to Steel Lake Presbyterian Church, at 1829 S. 308th St., just before 8 a.m., when the baby was found.

The infant was still alive and was taken to a local hospital, where she was found to be in fair condition, said Cathy Schrock of the Federal Way police.

Doctors believe the baby was no more than 12 hours old.

Video surveillance at the church revealed a young white woman dropped off the child at about 2:16 a.m., Schrock said.

Officers said it is not legal to leave a newborn child at a church or other public location, and the case is being investigated as a felony.

However, police said someone can legally turn over a baby or other dependant to qualified personnel, such as emergency medical technicians at a hospital or open fire station, without identifying themselves.

Federal Way police detectives say they are concerned for the health and safety of the mother and are eager to identify her to ensure that she receives proper care.

Anyone who recognizes the woman in the video link or photo above, they are asked to please call 911 or Federal Way Police Detective K.C. Krusey at (253) 835-6895.
