30 to 40 residents mistakenly report gunshots, crying woman

SEATTLE -- Proving that even dozens of witnesses can be wrong, early morning gunshots Tuesday in Queen Anne turned out to be just a couple of drunk people with fireworks, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Around 3:30 a.m., the 911 call center was flooded with 30 to 40 calls from residents reporting a man shooting a gun, a woman crying and people running near the 400 block of West Republican Street.

Officers arrived on the scene and received a lot of different descriptions of what happened from a lot of witnesses.

Officers figured out the two suspects, a 33-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, had run into an apartment at 500 W. Mercer St.

When the couple came to the door, they were noticeably intoxicated, and officers could smell marijuana inside the apartment, according to police.

According to police, the man was argumentative with officers, but the woman cooperated and explained what happened.

She said they had been outside shooting Roman candles at each other, and she had been laughing, not crying.

Officers found the remains of fireworks in the street and are requesting the couple be charged with reckless endangerment.
